Description
BEE HOUSE
This Bee House is the perfect way to welcome bees and other pollinating insects into your garden, especially if you live near native flowering plants such as pohutukawa or ti tree. Hang the house in a sunny, north facing spot. Female bees will nest in the hollow bamboo reeds, feeding their larvae with pollen and nectar they forage from nearby flowers.
Dimensions: 17 x 12 x 23 cm.
New Zealand has 28 species of native bees which help to pollinate our crops and gardens. However, unlike introduced honeybees, most of these little guys fly solo. Unfortunately, a reduction in wild flowers and nesting sites has made it very difficult for these bees to survive and many species are now endangered.
Most native bee species are non-aggressive and very rarely sting. They are smaller than honeybees and bumble bees, and are generally black in colour. This Bee House is a great way to teach kids about the important role bees play in our ecosystem. You can learn more about our native bee species here.
